M&L "Peanut"

Mya Lay Chocolate

I don’t think I’ve ever been as confused about a candy as I am with these M&L peanut candies. The package colour and the logo would suggest that you’re eating some kind of M&M knockoff. The bear throws you off a little bit, but the package is still pretty similar. The description and the pictures of the actual snack suggest that you’re getting a chocolate covered peanut. This suggests that while the marketing is a similar to M&M’s, the candy itself might be a little different. The thing is, it’s neither an M&M’s ripoff or a chocolate covered peanut.

What you get here is a candy coated peanut, that has then been coated in chocolate. At least I think it’s a candy coating. It’s not really that sweet, but outside of the peanut is a shell that crunches a lot like a candy coating. It feels like someone took the elements of M&M’s and then changed them up in weird ways. It’s a surprising combination of textures that I don’t think I really like. The problem is that this flavourless candy coating just makes your chocolate covered peanut seem gritty. I’m not sure why an M&M doesn’t feel the same way, but maybe it’s the lack of sweet in the candy coating.

Flavour wise these aren’t that bad, but it takes a little to get over the weird texture. The peanut has a really strong flavour, like it’s been roasted almost a little too long. The chocolate is fine, but the peanut flavour really takes over. As I said before, the weird crunchy shell has no flavour at all, unless it’s adding something to make the peanut flavour stronger.

It’s so strange to expect two different snacking possibilities, but in the end get neither. It’s a challenging thing to review because I feel like if you break the promise that you offer on the package then you should maybe lose some points in the novelty. However, this is a really novel snack, something I’ve never had before. Sure the texture doesn’t work at all, but at least it’s something new and not just a ripoff.
