I’m not really sure why they made these chips spicy. There are a few spicy ketchups out in the world, but I don’t think that they’re particularly popular. When I think of spicy sauces I think of hot sauce, barbecue sauce, and many Asian sauces. Ketchup always seems like a weird choice to make spicy. I think it has something to do with the fact that ketchup is normally a mix of tangy and sweet, so adding another flavour profile makes it a little much for my taste buds.
While I don’t really care for spicy ketchup, these chips weren’t that bad. The ketchup flavour was perfect. In fact, if Miss Vickie’s ever made a normal ketchup chip, I think it might rank as one of the best. Maybe they do make one and I’ve just never seen it. The problem with these chips is the same problem I’ve had with real spicy ketchup. Adding the heat to this tangy, sweet flavour is just too much. The reason these aren’t so bad is that the spice seems to creep up at the end, rather than blast you at the beginning. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the nice ketchup flavour before the burning sets it.
I’m not a huge fan of spicy food, so take my review with a grain of salt if you happen to love spicy foods. Maybe this flavour combination is perfect for some, but for me it’s just a little too much. It’s not that I don’t think they pulled off a spicy, sweet ketchup flavour, I just don’t think I wanted a spicy, sweet ketchup flavoured chip.
I would be really happy if they separated these two flavours, and Miss Vickie’s just made a ketchup chip and a spicy, maybe hot sauce flavoured chip instead. Oh and by the way, the texture was perfect as I usually find with Miss Vickie’s chips.
