I’ve probably said this before, and I’ll probably say this every single time I review Pez, the fun factor of this candy goes down a lot when you don’t factor in the dispenser. It’s interesting, but the reason I don’t factor in the dispenser is that Pez is often available without a dispenser, as a refill. It’s also interesting, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why the dispensers are so amazing. Objectively they’re really weird cubes with large (sometimes scary) heads attached to them. You pull the head back and a brick of candy is ejected from the neck.
The candy alone is what most people would call simple. It’s not that it’s not well made, it’s just designed to work with a very popular dispenser. The flavours, including this cherry flavour are also very basic. This cherry does not by any circumstances taste like a real cherry. It’s that classic fake cherry that most children associate with cherry. I’m not sure where this fake cherry flavour comes from, I’m guessing the soda industry, but it’s stuck in my mind as cherry. The good thing about the flavour of these cherry Pez is that they don’t overdue this cherry flavour. In recent years a strong cherry flavour has become trendy, but these are flavourful enough, but nothing that will blow your socks off.
Texture wise it’s one of those compressed sugar, hard candies. When you bite into it, it breaks apart into a powder, instead of shards of glass like sugar. I’m not sure why that’s the preferred choice for Pez, but it works well enough.
While I’m not really singing the praises of this cherry Pez, I will say that cherry is often my go to choice for Pez. That kind of goes to show that the real star of Pez is the dispenser.
