B-Pop Cola

Beryl’s

A fizzing, dark chocolate treat that’s flavour like cola seems like the kind of treat that no one has ever asked for. Often with snack foods they come about either by being a classic treat that someone, somewhere has been eating for a while or it’s an idea that might have some demand, something the people want. In all my years I’ve never met someone and had them mention how they felt that dark chocolate and cola would make a great combination.

The popping candy is really the only connection between cola and chocolate. Cola and popping candy is a natural connection. I’ve often said that the downfall of many cola flavoured treats is the disconnect in texture, however, cola flavoured popping candy often doesn’t suffer this problem as it compensates a little for the carbonation. I’ve also had several candy bars in the past that have mixed chocolate and fizzing candy and it’s worked fairly well. I’m not sure why, but the smoothness of chocolates with a few pops is actually kind of fun.

While each one of these treats works well enough with popping candy, when the chocolate and cola mix it’s a little strange. I wouldn’t call it disgusting, but it’s an odd combination that my mind is still trying to untangle. I think it’s mostly because the cola candy has an acidic flavour that’s fighting a little with the smoothness of the chocolate.

The one thing I’ll give credit to the makers of this candy, is that they balanced each odd element of this treat really well. I keep thinking that the chocolate or the cola is starting to overpower the other, but while they do fluctuate a bit neither is truly dominant. The popping also lasts from beginning to end of each piece. It’s an odd candy, and I would certainly recommend trying it. I don’t think it will be anyone’s favourite candy, but it’s an odd experience worth trying at least once.
