I feel like this candy didn’t exactly manage to get the essence of Sprite. The thing is, I could be wrong. What these green (not blue as the package would suggest) jelly beans taste like is super sweet lemon candies. One might argue that Sprite is just a super sweet lemon flavoured soda pop, but I feel like there’s more to it than that. I feel like Sprite has something else to it that gives it the unmistakable Sprite flavour. In fact when I drink Sprite my first thought it not of lemon or lime. Sprite seem to have a flavour all its own, and these just don’t really have it.
The problem I have is I’m not sure if the unmistakable Sprite flavour has more to do with the carbonated water attached to it, or if it’s actually a flavour component. If the fact that these don’t really work has anything to do with the fact that they’re not a soda, then I think we have a texture issue, and really serious one. I can’t imagine that any candy company could simulate that soda pop texture in most candies, much less a jelly bean. So this then begs the question, can anyone make a Sprite flavoured candy that actually tastes like Sprite?
If I looked at these jelly beans objectively, and took away the tie in with Sprite, they’re not that bad. I’d probably want a little more tart flavour to go with the lemon/lime. At this point I would probably just call them overly sweet lemon/lime jelly beans. I feel like somewhere out there someone is going to create the perfect Sprite themed candy, but it’ll take a lot more than just making it super sweet and lemon/lime flavoured.
