I don’t think we can argue that a cheese themed/flavoured ice cream treat is not some kind of gimmick, particularly to those in western countries. This isn’t the first time I’ve ever seen cheese flavoured ice cream (mostly in Asia), but it is rare. It’s not totally illogical as cheese is a dairy, and often used in sweet formats (cheesecake is the best example off the top of my head), but it seems to have very particular uses and ice cream bars seem a little weird.
Right off the bat I will admit that it does have a slightly cheesy flavour. I would describe it as similar to a cheddar, but a very mild cheddar. In fact the cheddar flavour is so mild I’d almost say it’s a hint of mild cheddar. The shape and colour has a stronger cheese vibe than the flavour. I’m not sure how disappointed I am about this though.
While the treat tasted fine, and it cooled me down on a warm day, I’m thinking I’d want more cheese flavour. What if, instead of being a vanilla ice cream with a hint of cheese flavour, it was a cheese ice cream with a hint of vanilla? I just feel like the vanilla and sweet flavour dominated the cheese to such a point that after a few bites it was almost lost. I’m not saying this should be a savoury ice cream, I just think you could tone down the sweet a lot more and still have a very good dessert.
If this ice cream had a bit more cheddar and a little less vanilla ice cream I think it could turn from a gimmick into a fascinating and refined dessert. I think there are many people out there who might appreciate a cool, but not too sweet treat. Best of all there’s so many ways you could expand into different cheeses too.
