Criss Cross

Solen

I’m not entirely sure that I understand the name of this bar. Criss Cross as an expression is meant to mean that two things converge several times. In food it can sometimes mean that two flavours or textures that you may not associate with each other are combined. It can also sometimes refer to the shape of a candy, where it’s almost braided. This bar contains none of these things. Flavour and texture wise it’s not really that unique, as coconut, cream and chocolate are commonly used together. From a design perspective there’s nothing criss cross about this bar either. What you have is long tubes of cookie filled with cream and covered with chocolate.

So the basic theme of this bar is kind of odd, but only because it’s not unusual at all. The other problem I have with this bar is the imbalance of the ingredients it does use. I would say that this bar is cream first, then chocolate and cookie, followed at the end with coconut. The cream is most certainly the dominant flavour, and unfortunately it’s a rather dull cream flavour. The cookie is pretty much exclusively used for the crunchy texture, the chocolate is decoration. The coconut is so weak that one might not even notice it.

I can’t say that I’m totally disappointed about the lack of coconut flavour, as I’m not a big fan of many coconut based treats. However, if you promise coconut it’s also disappointing if it’s just not there. I feel like this bar needs some tooling up in order to work. More/better chocolate, more coconut and a richer cream would be the first thing I would do to improve this bar. At this point this bar is just boring, and nothing crissy or crossy.
