This might be the first ever licorice candy that doesn’t really taste like licorice, yet I really didn’t like it very much. Right off the bat I should warn you that I don’t really like black licorice. I’ve tried to gain a taste for it, however the furthest I’ve managed to get is a tolerance. My tolerance allows me to keep strong black licorice treats in my mouth, and even allows me to make out the differences between different types of licorice candies. While I can’t say I enjoy most licorice candies, I can make out the various features of each when I review them. Why I continue to review black licorice is a bit of a mystery to me, I imagine it has something to do with being fair to each type of candy.
These odd little hard candies are a bit of a mystery to me. While the word “licorice” is not on it anywhere, the words “lakridsbolsjer” and “lakreidspulver” are, and I assume they would translate to licorice. There’s also an indicator about how “hot” this treat might be. In some countries the intensity of licorice flavour is associated with heat. The reason I’m mentioning this is that I don’t know if I could entirely call these licorice flavoured. There is a hint of licorice, but the main flavour is some kind of salty flavour with a hint of sour. At least that’s what appears to be on the outer coating. As you suck through the candy it turns much sweeter, with a remaining hint of licorice flavour.
I did not enjoy the salty/sour flavour at all. While I was kind of happy that it wasn’t a strong licorice flavour, I think I might dislike the salty/sour flavour of this coating more than licorice. I braced myself for a strong licorice flavour and was really knocked sideways by this odd coating. The candy on the inside was fine enough, as with the outer coating I feel like it could have used more licorice (never thought I’d say that in a review).
I’m not sure to whom these are a “classic”, but I feel like there could be room for an updated version. Considering how much the package claims to be “original” and “classic”, one might assume there was a new version of this snack that didn’t do so well. I’m thinking they might want to try and improve it again.
