Dumle "Liquorice"

Fazer

This candy was not what I expected, however if I got what I expected I would have been much more disappointed. What I expected was some kind of chewy licorice candy covered in chocolate. I thought the licorice might be soft, but I was expecting it to be chewy. Instead what I got was a wonderfully smooth caramel with a licorice flavour, covered in high quality milk chocolate. In hindsight it makes sense that I would get something better than expected since this candy is made by one of my favourite candy companies in the world, Fazer.

Fazer is very well known for high quality chocolate, as well as a great understanding of flavour balance. It was a little naive of me to think that they would just try and blow my taste buds away with a strong flavoured, chewy licorice. Don’t get me wrong, the licorice flavour is very strong. I would say that if you absolutely hate licorice, you will not like this candy at all. If you love licorice I think you’ll probably find this candy to be very fascinating. It may not be strong enough for those out there that love the double salt super strong licorice, but you might appreciate what they’ve done with the licorice flavour.

The beauty of this chocolate for someone like me is that they managed to get the essence of licorice, but make it a little more palatable. I’ve been trying to gain an appreciation for licorice for a few years now, and this kind of candy really helps that along. The licorice flavour is strong, and very real, however because they balance the flavour so well with a creamy chocolate and smooth caramel, the licorice isn’t overpowering.

I’m starting to feel like Fazer can do no wrong. I would be interested in seeing them step out of their comfort zone, just to know if they can actually make something bad. Every time I eat a Fazer chocolate I’m very happy that I did, even their licorice treats. I’ve had a few combinations that have not worked so well with chocolate, like cheese, garlic or onions. I’d be interested to see how Fazer handled something that has never worked.
