I wasn’t expecting much from this little treat. Not that I was expecting to be disappointed, I just expected it to be a simple square of chocolate flavoured taffy. It doesn’t say on the package that it’s chocolate flavoured, my assumption comes from the fact that there are many other treats out there with the word “fudge” in their names that are chocolate or chocolate flavoured. I’ll be honest, it’s an odd assumption to make really, it’s also an area where I’m often very confused. Fudge is a butter based treat that’s very soft and often available in many flavours. Chocolate is a common flavour of fudge, but it doesn’t have to be. Having said that, as I said before, there are many treats that use the word fudge to describe something that’s really chocolaty.

I guess what I’m saying is, I’m not sure how to think about this treat. It has the word “fudge” implied in the name, but it’s not really that chocolaty. It has a slight chocolate flavour, but I wouldn’t call it fudge, in the extreme chocolate sense. It’s very sweet and there might be a hint of chocolate, but it’s almost more of a vanilla/maple sugar flavour. I generally assume that fudge flavoured treats when they’re in the chocolate realm are supposed to be super chocolaty too. This is by no means a strong or rich chocolate flavour, it’s very light if it’s chocolate at all. It could be that they’re going for the fudge flavour from the treat called fudge, and not the chocolate. I’m very confused about this flavour, and I think that’s going to score against it.

The other thing worth mentioning about this treat is that it’s not pretty. The package design is okay, but the treat itself is an odd shaped, light brown glob. I’ve had taffy in the past that’s much nicer, and much more colourful. It’s not that it’s necessary to have pretty candy all the time, but with taffy there is great potential to have fun colours and flavours. Really the only thing going for this Fudg-eee treat is the texture. It’s a wonderfully soft taffy that didn’t hurt my teeth or jaw at all. I could probably eat a few of these before it would do any damage.
