Gap "Chocolate"

United

I don’t really know much about the history of Pocky. I remember eating it when I was a kid, but there was just one flavour and it might have been imported. Since then I believe the Pocky I get in Canada is actually made in Canada, so I imagine it’s made in many places all over the world. I say all of this so we can agree that Pocky as a candy has really taken the world by storm. It comes in many flavours and is available in many different countries. So it’s not surprising that other snack companies might take this formula and try and make it their own.

There’s often two types of companies that make their own versions of popular treats. There’s companies that believe they can improve upon a classic treat and then there’s companies that believe they can improve upon a classic treat by making it cheaper. I feel like Gap is an attempt to make Pocky cheaper. I’ll be honest, I’m not really sure what I paid for this Gap treat, but my guess is that it’s cheaper than Pocky. If it’s not cheaper than Pocky, then my guess is that it’s more profitable then Pocky.

The reason I suspect this is the lack of chocolate. It’s not that there isn’t any chocolate, but compared to many stick based cookies covered in chocolate, the coating on Gap is much thinner than many others, particularly Pocky. The chocolate is thin enough, and of fairly low quality, that the chocolate flavour is very much secondary to the cookie. The cookie is also not that impressive as it just tastes like a plain boring cookie. Even simple cookies can have a nice vanilla or butter flavour, these cookies are just plain.

Since I’ve seen these cookie sticks around, I’m sure someone is buying them. I’m guessing however that these might not be anyone's favourite cookie sticks, but they do fine in a pinch.
