Haribo Goldbears "Sour"

Haribo

There’s two things about this gummy that has to be the focus. It’s only because they’ve taken an already well established treat and simply added the word “sour”. This means that this candy has to check two boxes, it has to be Haribo Goldbears, and it has to be sour. I can say for certain that it does check one of the boxes perfectly, I’m sure you’ve guessed that the sour part is where it fails... sort of.

I wouldn’t not call these sour, as they are more sour than regular Goldbears. They do have a slight sourness to them, it’s just not that powerful. It seems like each bear is covered in a white grainy powder. My first guess (and hope) was that this powder was citric acid, a chemical commonly used to make treats sour. Unfortunately I feel like there’s more sugar in this coating than citric acid. I’m sure the goal was to try and make them sour, but not too sour for everyone. I feel like they may have gone too far in the wrong direction and made them way too sweet. If I had to describe the sour level of these bears, I would say that they’re slightly tart.

It could just be me, maybe I just love sour candies (and in particular gummies) so much that I keep chasing the dragon of extreme sourness. Maybe these are sour enough for some people, but maybe not. The sourness wasn’t the only gripe I had with these. When I opened the package I realized that I had been given a slightly defective bag of gummies. It appears that my bag only contains yellow and red gummy bears. There was one solitary green gummy bear as well, which only proved to me that this bag was slightly defective. I feel like this is a shortcoming in their quality control department.

I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy eating these bears. Goldenbears are really the gold standard when it comes to gummy bears, so the candy itself was very tasty and fun enough to eat. The problem came with the fact that the sour was just weak, and the selection of flavours I received was not great. I don’t know if I’ve ever eaten a bag of gummies with so many problems, that still tasted pretty good.
