This caramel corn is actually very original and genius. This bag of caramel corn comes from a series of caramel corn flavours that are themed to soda pop flavours. They also have root beer, orange pop, and many other flavours to choose from. I don’t know why I decided to pick up the grape flavour, but I don’t regret it at all. I also wouldn’t mind trying more of the flavours because this caramel corn not only tasted great, but it was really original too.
The simple way to make a grape soda themed caramel corn would have been to add a grape flavour to the caramel, dye it dark purple and call it grape soda flavoured. Instead, the people at Farm Boy made a regular and tasty caramel corn, then they covered it in a grape flavoured white chocolate. The advantage to this is you’re not just eating a grape flavoured popcorn, but instead you get a great grape flavour that’s mixed with the caramel corn flavour. Both of these flavours are present in each bite, and fortunately both work really well together. I feel like this is a great way to flavour caramel corn, without just turning it into a flavoured popcorn.
While the ratio of grape to caramel corn flavour is good, there is one part of this treat that I feel is missing, and that’s the soda. While this is certainly not a grape flavoured popcorn, I’m not sure if it’s a grape “soda” flavoured caramel corn either. I feel like it’s more of a grape flavoured caramel corn. Not that this was a bad thing, but it wouldn’t have taken much to give this treat a little more of a soda feel. A fizzing powder like baking soda would have been good, or even popping candy would have worked to give this a much needed fizzy soda feel.
Don’t get me wrong, I not only enjoyed this popcorn, I felt like it’s a unique way to make this concept work. There are a few more flavours that are soda pop exclusive, like cola and root beer that I might try. Maybe these flavours alone might sell the theme a little better, but I’m still happy I tried this one first.
