Haribo Volcano Zing

Haribo

The concept for these gummy volcanoes works remarkably well. On paper these are a series of fruity flavoured volcanoes that are filled with a sour goo. Thematically there are so many things that work with these, but they’re is also a problem that I just can’t get around.

The main thing that works is the idea that you get to munch on some tiny volcanoes, and the fact that the lava centres provide a little sour twist. I also like the various textures you get with each volcano. The bottom is a soft (almost marshmallow like) gummy, the volcano itself is a tougher gummy treat and centre isn’t even really a gummy but a goo instead. It’s not often you get two different textures in a gummy, and even more rare to get three distinctly different textures in one gummy. I should also mention that each type of gummy has a different flavour as well, but this also brings up the problem with these amazing treats.

The flavour is really where these gummies fail. It’s not that the flavour is bad, it’s just very un-creative. With such a range of textures and a really appropriate theme, it’s sad that they got a little lazy with the flavours. The first big problem is that the goo in the centre is the same flavour no matter which colour of volcano you choose. Worse yet it’s sour apple, one of my least favourite candy flavours. The good news about the sour apple however is the fact that the flavours of the volcanoes pretty much drown out any of the apple flavour.

Even though the flavours of the volcanoes drown out the sour apple, it’s still not great. The volcanoes come in three different colours/flavours; blue/blood orange, orange/lemon and green/grapefruit. The problem here is they’re all citrus fruits and they all taste pretty similar. It just feels like they could have been a lot more creative with the flavours. My mouth was loving the fun textures, but very bored by the fourth or fifth volcano because of the similar/boring flavours.

These are really a creative and interesting gummy treat from a texture and creativity perspective, they just got a little boring when it comes to flavour. Don’t get me wrong, they taste fine but since it’s such a fun use of theme and texture I was hoping they could have done more with the flavours as well.
