I’m always impressed at how much I actually enjoy eating Hi-Chew. When I first discovered them I was really interested in the most exotic flavours. At first Hi-Chew was an interesting candy because it offered great flavours from various Asian countries. I decided this time to focus on a simpler flavour, grape, and see how it holds up. As it turns out, it’s holds up pretty darn well.
I wouldn’t call the flavour anything particularly ground breaking. It tastes like grape, the fake grape that you associate with candy. Maybe it would have been cool if they had a more authentic grape flavour, but it might not really suit the brand. Hi-Chew has always leaned towards the fake candy flavours of the real thing. The good think is they use nice quality fake flavours, that may not taste like the real thing but represent it well.
Chew wise is where Hi-Chews do well. I’m sure if these were stale they may get kind of hard, but fortunately this pack of grape Hi-Chews is nice and soft. I noticed on this particular review that Hi-Chews have an expiration date. That tells me that somewhere, someone actually cares about how stale these get. I guess that makes sense since the word “chew” is literally in the name. These lived up to the chew name, but weren’t so chewy that my jaw was in any pain after eating about half of the package.
I also can’t get around the design of this candy. I’d like to say it’s original, but I’m not really sure. They look exactly like a really popular candy from the 80s called Bonkers. A candy that sits near and dear to my heart. I’m not sure who invented this light coloured cube with a darker coloured cube in the centre design, but I think it looks pretty fun. It doesn’t make you think of anything in nature, but it’s kind of a retro modern look if you think about it objectively.
