King Joy "Boy"

?

I have a lot to say about this “King Joy” treat, and most of it is not positive. The first point is the obvious point, yes it is a Kinder Joy ripoff. If you’re unfamiliar with Kinder Joy, it’s an offshoot of the Kinder Egg. It’s basically an egg with two compartments, one with a chocolate themed dessert and another with a toy. I’m not totally sure of the origins, but my suspicion is that it’s sold in places where where Kinder Eggs might melt. This treat does have the same format, but there are a few important differences.

The other way that it seems to mirror Kinder Joy is in the fact that it offers gendered versions, pink for girls and a blue for boys. Frankly I’m surprised that this is a thing in today’s world, but here we are. I picked up the boy version because I’m a boy, however it did get a little strange as the toy I received was a very small plastic hair brush. If I was to look at this through the lens of modern times, I’d congratulate them on being open enough to know that boys can care about their toy’s hair. However, you can’t ignore the idea that it doesn’t really fit the stereotypes they introduced by gendering their candy in the first place. I’m not judging, I’m just pointing out what I’m feeling.

All of this is meaningless to me anyways as I am the Candy Critic, so the dessert side is what I really care about. I’ll give you an overview, this sweet treat was very problematic. The first problem is the lack of chocolate and the over abundance of cookie spheres. Basically this dessert consists of a bunch of cookie spheres sitting in a white and brown chocolate. The chocolate is a little softer than your average chocolate bar, but not much softer. Instantly the ratio of chocolate to cookies was problematic as several of the cookies just fell out. Really there was only a small layer of chocolate deep in the bottom of the half egg bowl.

The cookies had a slight buttery flavour, but it wasn’t very strong. The chocolate had a hint of creamy and a hint of chocolate flavour, but mostly it just tasted like coconut oil. In general I was left with a fairly musty flavour with hints of what these could have been. It wasn’t horrible, but it was obviously not well thought out.

I’d like to say I was disappointed with this treat, but frankly when it comes to ripoff candies you have to expect it. The prize was either very confusing or very forward thinking, I’ll let you be the judge of that. I plan on keeping it just in case any of my stuffed animals need a little hair TLC.
