Manner "Zitrone"

Josef Manner

When I think of wafers, lemon is not the first thing that comes to mind. It’s generally chocolate, strawberry and vanilla first, then it might go into secondary fruit like lemons. I’m sure that this feeling is based on what I had when I was growing up. The great thing about Manner bars is the way they balance the chocolate and wafer. I find that many wafer bars seem to lean heavy on one or the other. Either the wafer is just there to add a bit of crunch, or there’s so much wafer that there’s only a hint of chocolate. Manner balances these flavours very well, so I was curious about how they would manage lemon, a flavour that I don’t normally associate with wafers.

The balance is still there, and the ratio of wafer to lemon is very good. I would say that this lemon flavour is on the sweeter side, but that seems to make sense in this context. Personally I would have preferred a more realistic sour lemon flavour, but I understand that it’s not something many people like. I also understand that people might have a hard time eating a fairly large sour wafer bar. Keeping the lemon sweet makes sense for most people, even if I’d prefer sour.

I don’t think this will be many people’s favourite Manner bar, but I do like the fact that it exists. I like that they went for something a little different, outside of chocolate. I’m not sure if Manner makes a strawberry, or any other fruit based wafer flavours, but based on this I’d be interested in trying them.
