Marianne "Blue"

Fazer

When I first saw this candy, I wasn’t sure if I would be writing this review. The reason is that I’ve already reviewed a candy called Marianne by Fazer. The only difference I could see at first was the colour of the wrapper. Nothing on the wrapper suggests that it’s any different than the Marianne with the red wrapper. My only thought was that maybe this was a special colour of wrapper to celebrate a holiday or maybe to celebrate the Finnish flag. Then I decided to do a comparison (look below) and instantly after opening the package I could see a difference. The design etched into the each candy was different.

After eating a few of them, I realized that while the hard mint candy on the outside was the same, the filling seems to be different. Colour wise I would say that the blue wrapped candy has a lighter brown filling than the red wrapped package. I know the red wrapped package is filled with chocolate, so I was curious about the blue. My guess just based on the looks might be a lighter/milkier chocolate, but after biting into it I realized that it’s more likely some kind of caramel.

The texture of this centre bit is fairly chewy which also leads me to believe that it’s a caramel as well. I actually spent more time trying to figure out exactly what the flavour is supposed to be, that I didn’t even think about if the flavour worked. I decided to wait a few days and try another one and look at it more objectively.

The caramel is fine, but I’m not sure if it blends with mint as well as chocolate. I’ve had a few mint flavoured caramels in the past, but I believe almost all (if not all) of them also had a chocolate element. So while I applaud Fazer’s attempt at updating their classic treat, I don’t think it’s really as good.
