The first thing that I’m assuming about this candy is that the macadamia nut is going to be the focal point. When you put the word royal in front of any ingredient in a treat, the assumption is that ingredient is something very special. If you took this same chocolate treat and called it “Patons Macadamias Royal Toffee Milk Chocolate”, you’d assume that the toffee was going to be amazing. The same thing would work if you put the word “royal” in front of the words “milk chocolate” too. The key to filling my expectation of this treat is to have a wonderful macadamia nut that is only improved with a nice layer of chocolate and some kind of toffee crunch. I’ll be honest, that’s a lot to ask from any chocolate treat.
As soon as I bit into this chocolate I instantly discover that my expectations are not to be had. In fact, it’s almost the opposite of my expectation. Flavour wise, the chocolate and toffee are truly the stars of the show. I would say that the most dominant flavour is most certainly the chocolate, with a nice toffee aftertaste. There is a macadamia nut involved, in the centre. The thing is, the macadamia nut feels really small compared to how much chocolate you get. I would easily guess that the nut makes up less than one quarter of this entire treat. That makes it hard for any ingredient to be dominant, and even harder for a nut with as subtle a flavour as the macadamia.
The nut adds a nice crunch in the centre, so it’s not entirely ineffectual. The toffee also adds some crunch as well as a nice aftertaste. I would by no means call this treat a failure as each and every ingredient is high grade and the chocolate and toffee flavours are spectacular. I would just describe this chocolate treat as not exactly being what I expected, but still really tasty and high quality. Unless you happen to be a macadamia nut enthusiasts who doesn’t care for milk chocolate and toffee, you’ll probably love this chocolate bite. You’ll probably consider it one of the finer chocolate treats if you eat it without reading the package.
