An ice cream based on s’mores not only sounds like a good idea, but maybe something kind of original as well. I can’t think of any time I’ve seen a s’mores ice cream treat on the shelf before. I imagine this kind of treat would be like rocky road ice cream, only instead of nuts there’s graham cracker bits. The ingredients in s’mores should work in an ice cream, it seems like something that should be simple to make, but maybe it’s not?
There are three ingredients in s’mores, graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow. This ice cream treat manages to incorporate two of these ingredients and make them shine. One ingredient however is almost totally lost, so much so that I didn’t even think it was in it at all until I ate my second ice cream treat. The chocolate and graham cracker are all over this bar. The chocolate in particular is very present, considering it’s chocolate ice cream with a chocolate shell. There’s also lots of graham cracker bits as well, both in the ice cream and in the shell. The flavour of both also shine through very well.
The problem is the lack of marshmallow. As I said before, the first one of these that I ate, I didn’t taste or see anything resembling marshmallow at all. On the second one I ate I did see a very thin swirl of something white in my chocolate ice cream. Flavour wise the white marshmallow swirl didn’t add anything, but it was visible. It’s funny that they didn’t get the marshmallow to work considering I’ve had other ice creams (rocky road) that’s where totally loaded with marshmallows.
The final problem with reviewing this ice cream for me is that I actually enjoyed it. While I can’t say they delivered on the full s’mores experience, President’s Choice did make a fine ice cream bar. The chocolate coating was wonderful, as was the chocolate ice cream. The graham cracker was a great addition both texture and flavour wise. Eating this treat was a great experience, it just wasn’t s’mores like at all because one of the key ingredients is almost entirely missing.
