There are certain candies that I sometimes avoid reviewing, and they are copies of other famous candy brands. This is a perfect example of that, and it’s likely I would have avoided reviewing these as well but there is one reason I want to bring these up. Before I get into that reason in detail I just want to start off with the “legal” disclaimer. What I often say before reviewing copycat treats is that I could be wrong about the fact that they’re a copy at all. I don’t dig into the history of treats that I review, and so there’s a possibility that this treat came out before the treat that it’s copying, but maybe it just didn’t take off and become the global phenomenon that the other treat became. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get back to the reason I chose to review this (potential) copycat snack.

There are two camps when it comes to chocolate covered in a candy shell. There are the M&Ms camp and the Smarties camp. I should say that when I’m talking about Smarties, I’m not talking about the tube of hard candy that’s very popular in the United States. I’m talking about the round candy coated chocolate treat that’s popular in places like Canada and the United Kingdom. The reason this treat is fascinating is that those of us out there that have enjoyed both M&Ms and Smarties will know that these are in fact a copy of Smarties and not M&Ms. Some people claim that these two treats are “the same thing” and I’m here to argue that they are not.

The shape of a Smartie, the type of chocolate, the colours and the thickness/texture of the shell of these two candies are completely different. This candy fits firmly into the Smarties copycat area and not M&Ms. I feel like someone who’s only familiar with M&Ms might say that these are similar but kind of different than M&Ms would be right, but someone who knows Smarties would say these are pretty darn similar. This is all to say that if you want to know what I think of these, just read my Smarties review, but lose a few points for creativity.
