Reese Peanut Butter Cups "With Caramel"

Reese

Somebody should just kick me in the head. Really, I'm begging for it. I am one of the biggest critics against the fact that the candy industry just keeps making the same candy with the same “new flavours” as every other candy. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve eaten a dark or white chocolate version of a classic treat, or how many peanut butter or caramel version of the same treat I’ve tasted. Every time they come out with a new boring version of a treat I tell myself I’m not going to bother, but here I am reviewing another. Here’s what I picture happened in the meeting where these Reese Peanut Butter Cups “With Caramel” were developed…

Guy 01: Hey, people like peanut butter cups a lot.
Guy 02: People like caramel a lot.
Guy 01 trips and his cup lands in Guy 02's caramel.
Guy 01: You got caramel all over my peanut butter cup!
Guy 02: You got your peanut butter cup in my caramel!
… or something like that.

Having complained so much about what a boring idea this is, you might be wondering what I think of these. Well, surprisingly I don't think the caramel is really necessary. It doesn't improve the cups at all. The great thing about peanut butter and chocolate is the sweet and savory combination. These are a little too sweet for my liking and the caramel flavour really isn't strong enough to make a difference. I couldn't actually taste the caramel until I popped a whole cup in my mouth and really searched for it.

It's not that I think this mix is bad, caramel, chocolate and peanut butter can work well together. I also think that these Peanut Butter Cups do taste different, but it just doesn't taste as good as the plain old Reese Peanut Butter Cups. I'm not sure who will give out first – will the candy companies stop making these kind of boring variations to their treats or will I give up eating them?
