Reese's Big Cup "with Caramel"

Reese

This candy is truly a marvel of candy engineering. I’ll get into the details about how it tasted and the texture in just a little while, but I can’t help but be amazed at the brilliant design of this peanut butter cup. Basically what you have is a smaller peanut butter cup submerged in caramel, surrounded by another chocolate shell. It’s as if they made a caramel cup and just stuck a peanut butter cup in the middle. The thing is it’s not like any part of this treat is slapped together at all, each component is perfectly placed. It’s truly a piece of candy design as high art.

The good thing about this design is that all of the ingredients are well measured, so each bite you’re getting pretty much the same amount. That’s not to say that each component of the treat is perfectly balanced, it just means that you get the same amount from bite to bite. I would say that ratio wise these cups are good, but not perfect. The problem is that the caramel flavour is a little bit weaker than the chocolate and peanut butter. This could be fixed by either adding more caramel, or by using a darker, stronger tasting caramel.

Honestly I’d probably prefer a stronger tasting caramel over more caramel. At this point the balance of the sweetness of caramel to peanut butter and chocolate is pretty good, so you wouldn’t want to ruin that. I think a slightly stronger flavour of caramel would change it from being mostly just a sweetener to an important component of these cups.

The sheer brilliance of the design of this cup is worth buying a pack of these. Reese could have been lazy and just mixed the caramel with the peanut butter, or even worse just made caramel flavoured chocolate. As it stands now it’s a creative and complex system that I hope they keep up and maybe experiment with a few other flavours.
