Sakuyama Choco Jiro

Emmy

I had a really hard time deciding what category to put these treats. The issue is a ratio problem, and it’s all about how much chocolate there is in comparison to cookie. Most of the time when cookies are involved, there’s a cookie with a layer or coating of chocolate. These feel a lot more like chocolates with a cookie wedged into it. However, in this case the base is a cookie, but there’s just a lot of chocolate piled on top.

The cookies are also a little odd, because they’re square. It’s odd because the “chocolate coating” is round, and much larger than the cookie. There’s also supposed to be some kind of cream filling, but it’s hard to find within this giant glob of chocolate. Identifying this candy is challenging, but the other problem is that these do not transport well. I would even guess that a few hours in your bag might do some serious damage, particularly if it’s at all hot outside. A number of my Sakuyama Choco Jiro were pretty destroyed. It’s a shame because the chocolate has some cute and fairly detailed pictures in each one. There’s also supposed to be writing on the back of the cookie portion and a good deal of mine where flaked off or broken.

I’m thinking that a bag is not the best way to package this fairly delicate treat. Maybe a nice box with little squares to keep your cookies safe would work better. The good news however is that the cookies and the chocolate were fairly tasty and had a fun texture. The white cream really didn’t play much of a role at all, sometimes to such a degree that I wasn’t sure if there was white cream in all of them. The theme of these cookies (Bigfoot) is super fun (a big part of the reason I bought them), the taste and texture is also good. The problems are that it needs better packaging and you have to know that you’re really getting a chocolate heavy cookie treat.
