I’m not sure if I would call this bar bitter. I think a better way to describe the chocolate of this bar is not sweet. I know that bitter is often thought of as the opposite of sweet, and by saying it’s not sweet would imply that it’s bitter, but I don’t think it’s really the case. There is a certain amount of sweetness to this bar, and a certain amount of bitterness too. When the chocolate melts in your mouth it’s as if both of these flavour profiles are having a race to your taste buds. The thing is, neither really seems to win. It’s as if the race lasts longer than the chocolate flavour last.
As a wafer bar, I would call this bar slightly above average. It’s a good wafer bar, but not the best I’ve ever eaten. I tend to like my wafer bar to be a little bit chocolate heavy in both taste and texture. I would say that this bar certainly leans on the chocolate side when it comes to taste, but not really on texture. Texture wise this bar is certainly more wafer forward, with the chocolate between the wafers doing most of the heavy lifting. The chocolate coating on the outside is very thin, and not too impressive. To improve this bar, they could either add more chocolate to the outside, or get rid of it all together.
The best way to describe this bar flavour wise is rich and chocolaty. I wouldn’t describe it as totally smooth, but it has a nice sweet balance with the bitter. In the past I’ve said that I’m not a huge fan of wafer forward candy bars, but bars like this have changed my mind. The wafer doesn’t feel like a way to make this bar cheaper, which is often the case with wafer bars. Instead the wafers give this bar some strength and a slight crunch that’s really nice.
