The Jos Louis is a classic Canadian treat, so I might have a bit of a bias when I review it. I can remember getting these as a kid and really enjoying them. They were never a favourite, but I don't remember being disappointed with them either. Today however, my opinion has changed. I'm not sure if it's because the treat has changed, or if it's me that has changed, but I was kind of disappointed with this cake.
Of the three elements of this cake, only one was up to snuff, the white icing in the centre. It was creamy, sweet, and there was just enough. Everything else in this cake was fairly disappointing. The chocolate coating was very thin, and the texture of the chocolate coating was very brittle and waxy. The cakes had a really strong red colour, instead of brown, and could have used more cocoa flavour. The cakes were also all askew and it made my cake look pathetic and awkward.
I had such fond memories of the Jos Louis, but this time it really didn't hold up at all. It's sad that such a disappointing cake is a symbol of Canadian snacking. Either Vashon needs to improve this treat, or we need to fine a new symbol.
