Some might call this taffy average, and I would agree, but not in a bad way. I think if you’re looking to enjoy a nice simple strip of taffy, these cherry Airheads are a great way to go. There’s not surprises at all in this candy, but sometimes you don’t want something bold and new, sometimes you want something comforting and expected. It’s not that I don’t like to have bold and different treats, it’s just also nice to have something that won’t freak you out.
The reason the average word works so well to describe this taffy is that it pulls off average very well. The flavour is a typical fake cherry flavour, but it’s very balanced. It’s not too weak or too strong a flavour. It also has a really nice chewy texture. Some taffies are so soft that they fall apart instantly, but most taffies are so dense and chewy that after only a few chews your jaw is in extreme pain. This Airhead (and I assume it’s the same for most Airheads) is just right texture wise. It’s chewy enough to give you some satisfaction, but soft enough that after eating this entire strip of taffy my jaw was fine.
I imagine that if this Airhead strip was much bigger I might have eventually had a sore jaw, but at this small 156 gram strip is just perfect. There might also be one other factor that made the texture of this strip of taffy a little nicer. At the time it was being stored in my kitchen, and I would say that my kitchen was at a slightly above average temperature. I would have to try one of these at a cooler temperature to be sure, but at a slightly above average temperature the texture was perfect.
The lesson here is that you can pull off average and make it better by just being as average as possible.
