Australian Rum & Cola Rock Candy

Random Harvest Australian Gourmet

I’m not sure I knew what to expect with a candy that tastes like rum and cola. In the past, hard candies that I’ve tasted with “rum’ in the name tended to be butter rum candies. They would be almost a butterscotch or caramel flavour. I’ve also tasted a few cola flavoured candies in the past, and had better and worse experiences with all of them. Cola is a tough flavour to get right, rum is a flavour that normally has an intense butter flavour added.

This candy is a little like some of the cola flavoured candies I’ve had, but nothing like the butter-rum candies I’ve had. In some ways I would like to see someone try and combine a butterscotch-rum candy with cola, but I can understand why it might not work. The cola flavour of this candy hits you right off the bat, instantly you get the sour lemon like flavour you get with good cola flavoured candies. Few people associate sour with cola, but it’s actually really important part.

After the sour and slight cola flavour, things with this candy get a little weird. It’s almost as if they’re teasing you with a great cola flavour, then suddenly they give you a strong boozy flavour that just gets rid of the cola flavour entirely. I guess one could argue, depending on the amount of rum you like with your cola that this flavour is kind of authentic. My problem is that I assume that most people like cola in their rum to soften or even get rid of the boozy flavour. This candy on the other hand reminds you that there’s booze in rum and cola.

I guess the biggest problem is you get that strong boozy flavour, but none of the buzz. I’ll be honest, I feel like this candy is pretty close to tasting like the real thing, the problem is that I don’t think I want that flavour. I don’t really know what I wanted when I ate these, but I am honestly left confused a little grossed out by this candy.
