There are several things about this candy that are very unique. When you think of licorice treats you most often think about black licorice, and therefore most of the time licorice treats are black in colour. These on the other hand come in both black and white versions. The shape is the classic Bilar shape, which appears to be some kind of old timey racing car. I’m not really sure why they go with racing cars, but I’m sure there’s some kind of history behind it.
The two colours present an interesting question, and that is, is there a difference between the two colours flavour wise? The answer to that is yes, they’re actually really different. The black cars are the easiest to explain, they’re salted licorice through and through. It’s not the most potent salted licorice I’ve ever tasted, but it’s not the weak either. The white cars on the other hand are a little harder to explain. The best description I can give you is that they’re still licorice, but they seem to be cut with some kind of subtle fruit flavour. I couldn’t tell you what fruit it is, but it cuts into the powerful licorice flavour enough to make it a little more tolerable for those of us that aren’t hard core into licorice.
Another unique feature of these chewy cars is the powder coating on the outside. Most of the time when you see a powder coating on the outside of gummy treats, you assume it’s either going to be sweet or sour. The coating on these however are salty. It might not be entirely salt on the outside, there might be a hint of sweet as well, but the salt flavour is most certainly dominant. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the salty coating, I think I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t there. It’s very appropriate for the treat, considering the context.
I can’t say I love these gummy cars, and in the future I’ll probably go for the fruit version of the Bilar instead. These are however fairly unique, and the white cars created a flavour that allowed those of use that are a little more timid about our licorice choices to enjoy this treat a little more.
