I really appreciate what the folks at Orion are trying to do with these gummies. If you want to look at these gummies from purely the innovation angle, then these are a complete success. They’re not only a unique flavour, tamarind, but they also have an added feature that I can’t say I’ve ever seen in gummies before. With this bag of tamarind gummies is a mysterious little green sack filled with some kind of brown powder. The idea according with the package is that you sprinkle this brown powder on top of your tamarind gummies thus filling them with extra flavour.
While I really like the idea of adding flavours, textures and even a little interaction with candy, I objectively didn’t really like these. The gummies themselves were fine, they had a nice tamarind flavour and the colour was dead on. If I was reviewing just the gummies these would probably do pretty well. The problem is that the powder is just not great. I’ll be honest, a big part of why the powder didn’t work is a subjective opinion and not really objective. If you like spicy salt mixed with sweet then this might work a bit better for you than it did for me. I’m not a huge fan of spicy fruit, but I know that there are many out there who love it.
If you take my subjective opinion out of the equation, there’s still one big flaw with the flavour package that can’t be overlooked. When you pour the package of spicy salt on the gummies it tends to just fall off. I think the only way to get the powder to stick would be to get the gummies wet and if you’re eating them on the go that would mean giving them a lick. That much work could prove to be difficult on the go.
I like the concept of these gummies, I like the unique flavour and the fact that it’s made up of unique flavours. There’s a lot going for these gummies, and other than the slight flaw of the powder not really sticking to the gummies everything promised is delivered. Unfortunately one of the things promised is just a flavour that I don’t like.
