I have to be honest, when I first saw these gummies I had a brief moment where I hoped that they would be anything but lemon or banana flavoured. I had a brief moment when I thought about how cool it would be to have a bread flavoured gummy. As I’ve said many times before about gummies in the shape of savoury foods, I probably wouldn’t actually like the flavour of a bread flavoured gummy, but the idea brought me such great joy. It takes only a quick inspection of the package to realize that they are in fact lemon flavoured, better than banana, but nothing revolutionary.
Gummies are an amazing candy medium. I’ve seen gummies in all shapes, sizes and colours. Some are really simple and others are works of art. What I’m saying is there is no reason you couldn’t make a lemon flavoured gummy look like a loaf of bread, that is unless you chose not to. If you had packaged these as gummy french fries, I would pretty much be writing exactly the same review only substituting the word french fry for bread. What you have here are rectangles of yellow, lemon gummy with no features or any kind of interesting shape at all. Visually they’re super boring, and if it wasn’t for the fact that the taste and texture was okay, these would be getting a much lower review. I feel like these were being sold by someone who had ideas and knew how to make interesting packages, instead of someone actually interested in making fun candy.
I feel like there’s a way you could make gummy baguettes interesting, and it’s not that complicated. First and foremost you need to go further than just making rectangles. The advantage is that it’s very difficult to make gummies that don’t have one flat side, and bread has a flat bottom too. So it would be really easy to make a loaf shaped gummy. I would also suggest adding some cream colour to the mix in order to make them less bright and transparent. If you really wanted to go all out, why not add some crunch bits into the mix to simulate seeds or crust. Finally, why not just go brown, make them chocolate flavoured, and I feel like you’d have a pretty excellent baguette themed gummy candy.
