There are a few things we have to unpack about these Cheetos. The first, and most obvious thing you can see about these Cheetos is that they’re made in Thailand. From what I can put together, the package has the flavour on it, “American cheese”. So the implication is that these Cheetos are either made to taste like the American version of Cheetos, or they’re flavoured with American cheese. I have issues with American cheese, mostly that it seems weird that it’s not really cheese and it’s based on cheddar cheese which is totally British. I’ll go with the idea that these are supposed to be based on the American Cheetos and hope for the best.
I don’t actually have a bag of American Cheetos in front of me to compare, but I feel like these taste pretty much the same. The difference however is that the flavour is much less intense. I would call this a casual dusting of flavour, where I would describe American Cheetos as being covered in cheese powder. I’m not sure why this choice was made, but I still enjoyed eating these. I’d probably enjoy more cheese, but I don’t know if I’d enjoy more cheese even more.
Texture wise, these Cheetos pretty much match the American standard. For those unfamiliar with Cheetos, and why they’re different than cheese puffs, I’ll offer the following description: Cheetos look like the machines at a cheese puff factory had broken, and accidentally shot out slightly denser cheese puffs that look really horrible. Cheetos have a really nice crunchy density, however they look like something a dog might have left on your lawn a week or two ago (but bright orange). I believe this rather grotesque shape is actually beneficial as it allows for the cheese powder to settle into the cracks and crevasses.
If you’re a Cheetos fanatic from the US, then you might be a little disappointed with the lesser cheese. If you’re just craving a cheese treat and you happen to be in Thailand, these will do fine.
