Twinkies "Chocolate Cake"

Hostess

It's been a few years since I last ate a Twinkie, not because I don't like them, it's just that the opportunity hasn’t come up. Now I have the opportunity to try a new Twinkie variety (or old, I don't really know the Twinkie’s history that well), and I've got a bit of a dilemma. The thing about these Twinkies is that they're really good, I like them a lot. From what I can remember about the regular vanilla Twinkies, I think I might like these more. I looked back and realized that I haven't reviewed the classic Twinkies either, so I have no reference.

Is it possible that the first Twinkie review on Candy Critic is a variation of the original, and not only that, but a variation that's better than the original? This seems so wrong. The problem, or advantage this cake has is cocoa. The cocoa flavour is great, and it balances so well with the cream filling. I would say the only disadvantage is what this cake looks like. A brown log is not the most appealing thing to look at, let alone eat. I would even say that looks are where the classic Twinkie wins out.

It's not that I hate the classic Twinkie, in fact it's one of my occasional indulgences. The thing is, the chocolate cake in this version just adds so much more to the flavour of this treat. I'm conflicted with nostalgia vs chocolate, but frankly this is the best kind of conflict one could ask for.
