This is probably one of the better examples of a cola flavoured treat. While they didn’t manage to get the texture or refreshing feeling you get when you drink a cola, they really nailed the flavour. They got the flavour so right that I’m willing to excuse the other parts a little. Sure they could have added some kind of fizzy (Pop Rocks) type candy into this lollipop, but even without it, it still worked well for me. Not every candy company gets this flavour right, some even manage to fake a bit of the texture (with the above mentioned popping candy) but they still don’t get the flavour.
The key to a good cola flavour is a blend of sweet and sour. People don’t think about cola as being sour, but there is a slightly astringent acid flavour to cola that many people don’t think about. If you take this sour flavour away, cola just doesn’t taste the same. When you’re trying to make a cola flavoured candy this sour flavour really balances things out well. The problem is that most people, even candy makers seem to associate only the sweet with cola, and often leave out the sour. Even if they have the sour aspect, it’s really hard to balance to make it subtle like you’d find it in real cola.
These lollipops got this subtle sour flavour down perfectly. Flavour wise these really do taste like a can of cola. The advantage is that since it’s a lollipop it lasts much longer than any can of cola (at least for me). The disadvantage is that (as I said before) there’s something missing when it comes to fizziness and refreshment. It’s a fine lollipop and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants that cola flavour, without all the problems of spilling.
