Alpenliebe "Grape and Cream"

Perfetti van Melle

For the many years that I’ve been doing this site, I can’t recall if I’ve ever had a creamy grape treat before. If I have had any in the past, I’m certain that it’s very rare. The only time I can recall having a creamy grape treat in my life is a grape version of a Creamsicle, but I think that was in the 80s or 90s. Grape ice cream is also something that really doesn’t exist either, I’ve been told that it’s actually a difficult thing to make due to the chemistry of grape juice. Basically what I’m saying is that a creamy grape candy is very rare, so this lollipop is unique for that alone.

I would describe the flavour as interesting. Not interesting bad, but maybe not interesting great either. The main thing to keep in mind is that the grape flavour is a fake grape flavour, and didn’t really taste like real grapes at all. I feel like the fake grape flavour actually goes pretty well with the creamy flavour of these lollipops. So I would call this flavour combination a success, but I’m not sure if it’s a true success.

One important reason this treat worked at all is the ratio of cream to grape flavour. I think the grape flavour could have easily dominated and would have made this taste like an odd grape lollipop instead of a creamy grape lollipop. It would have taken a lot more creamy flavour to overpower the grape, but if they did it might have tasted like sour milk. As it is, they managed to get the balance really well done.

I’m not sure if this will be anyone’s favourite flavour of lollipop, but I think many people might be interested in this flavour combination. Cream goes with so many different fruits, like peaches, blueberries and strawberries, but for some reason grapes just aren’t in that list. Maybe this is a turning point, or maybe it’s just an odd experiment.
