I had two questions in my head when I saw this gum. First of all I wanted to know if chocolate flavoured gum could work. Based on this particular gum, I’d say it could work, but this isn’t really the best example. For now I’ll focus on the flavour (you’ll understand more below), the chocolate didn’t taste bad in this case, but it just wasn’t really strong enough. It could be that chocolate doesn’t have lasting power in gum form and in that case it really doesn’t work. This gum only lasted a few minutes and I was kind of disappointed about that. I feel like I wouldn’t mind chewing a piece of chocolate for upwards of 30 minutes.

The second question comes from the texture. Crunky as a brand is known as a chocolate with bits of rice crisps inside. This is not only Crunky themed gum, but the name continues to imply that there’s a crunchy element, and there is... sort of. I would actually describe the crunchy element of this gum as more of a gritty texture than crunchy like a normal Crunky candy bar. There is a distinct difference between crunchy and gritty in my book, and more often than not gritty is not pleasant. That is the case with this gum as objectively the texture is not great, however it’s kind of fun that they put in the effort to make it crunchy.

There is one other texture factor that messes with the brain a bit. The texture of chewing gum and chocolate are very different. If you’re not really prepared for it, the idea of chewing chocolate kind of messes with your head a bit. I almost think the surprising gritty texture distracts your brain long enough to make the fact that you’re chewing on chocolate not so weird. Maybe if more chocolate companies started making chocolate flavoured gum we might get used to this odd situation, but for now it’s still a little weird.

I say that Lotte deserves a serious “A” for effort with this gum. I’m pretty sure that many people will say it’s not their cup of tea, but they promised something a little weird and completely delivered it. If you were to chew this gum without knowing what Crunky was (a blind taste test), I think you’d probably not like the gum at all. However, if you’re familiar with Crunky and down to try something a little weird, it’s not that bad, but only for a few minutes.
