The trend in potato chips over the last few years is to create something more than a singular flavour. The attempt is to re-create the flavour of a meal with multiple combined flavour in each bag of chips. I'm not sure if I like this trend, and I can tell you from experience that more often than not, I'm not happy with the results. The biggest problem is combining multiple flavours in one bag never really seems to work. If you take many of these "meal" flavoured chips and taste them blindfolded (not knowing what kind of meal it’s supposed to be) chances are you won't be able to guess the flavour. So, when I came across this bag of Indian Curry Style chips, I was skeptical.
In the end, I had nothing to worry about. I opened this bag and just by the smell I could recognize what flavour it was going for. I had a few bites and I was really impressed at how tasty these chips were and how much they tasted like curry. I thought about it for a while and I realized why this worked so well. These chips are not trying to be a curry meal, these chips are flavoured with curry spices. Curry is a spice that goes well with potato, so naturally this snack really worked well.
Even more impressive is the fact that Lay's decided to go with a very mature flavour, and they handled it in a mature way. Curry is not a food that I ate as a child, but as an adult I love the stuff. These chips might not go over with kids that well, with some exceptions, but adults will love them. I hope Lay's gives their future flavours this much thought, by keeping the idea and the flavour very simple.
