Cutie Cakes

Original Gourmet Food Company

I don’t think there’s any way to review these cakes without comparing them to Twinkies. I feel like the makers of these cakes would agree that they were trying to make a fake Twinkie, as on the package it claims it’s “an American brand”, however, the package claims that this cake is in fact manufactured in Turkey. So other than the similarities it has with a Twinkie, it’s not really American at all. While you can’t deny the similarities, you also can’t help but notice the differences as well.

The most notable difference is the cream in the middle, it’s chocolate instead of vanilla. While there are varieties of Twinkies with chocolate fillings, most of the time it’s vanilla. There also doesn’t seem to be as much cream as a Twinkie, but but this cream might also be a little more dense. The cake is also a little more dense than Twinkies, which is neither a good or bad thing, just different. Having carried a few Twinkies around with me before eating them only to discover a smear of cake and icing in a plastic sleeve, maybe a denser cake might be a good idea. I might also argue however that a lighter cake is more pleasurable to eat.

The last difference is a step up from the classic Twinkie, and that’s marketing. While we all know the name Twinkie, I feel like Cutie Cake is objectively a better name for these fun cake treats. I also like the packaging, it evokes the same joy I get when watching anything with the Minions.

While I don’t think these are as tasty as Twinkies, the chocolate cream would need much more cocoa flavour, and the cake should be a little lighter. I do feel that these are tasty enough. If you’re craving a quick little cake and you come across these it might fill the gap. If you’re craving a Twinkie you might be a little disappointed.
