Dairy Milk "Fireworks"

Cadbury

This is a good chocolate bar. It’s both very good to eat and it’s kind of fun too. The ratio of ingredients is pretty spot on, so nothing stands out in a way that it shouldn’t. The three parts that make up this bar are chocolate, popping candy and some kind of M&M like chocolate candy. Don’t get me wrong, the chocolate is the star of this show. When you bite into this bar the main thing you taste some nice quality Dairy Milk chocolate. I’ve always considered Cadbury and therefore Dairy Milk chocolate to be one of the highest quality mass produced chocolates in the world. I will argue that the quality varies from country to country, but in Canada where I got this bar, Cadbury is doing it very right. The co-stars of this bar, the M&M like candy and the popping candy are not hidden at all either. The clever thing about this bar is it would have been very easy to put too much or too little of these ingredients into this bar thus ruining the fine chocolate experience, but they didn’t.

In fact I would say that the amount of popping candy is perfect, and I don’t say this lightly. When I first bit into this bar I was kind of worried that there wasn’t enough popping candy. For the first few seconds there was no pop at all. Then there was a build up starting from a slight crackle all the way to a nice comfortable buzz of crackling throughout my mouth. Somehow Cadbury managed to build up the crackle of the fizzing candy, then at a certain point it just stayed consistent. I’m not sure how one does that, but it worked very well. The crunchy candy was an okay addition, as it gave me something to bite down on in each bite, but it wasn’t the star of the show. It may have added a little colour to the look of the bar that was kind of nice I guess.

This is a good chocolate bar, but it’s not original. Even Cadbury has played with this combination in the past. If you’ve never had a bar with popping candy, I recommend picking this up because it’s a good example of how this can work. For me at least, the novelty of popping candy and chocolate mixed together is a little old. When I get a bar like this it’s kind of fun, but it never feels like a thing I have to try again. I feel like popping chocolate bars is something that gets old kind of quickly. Maybe that’s why this, and many of the other fizzing bars I’ve eaten are temporary. It feels like every few years some candy company will come out with a popping candy bar, then in a few months it disappears. The bars are always fun to eat, but I just doubt anyone would say that it’s their favourite bar of all times.
