Fruit & Nuts

Danish Dreams

The concept of a fruit and nut bar is not new, there are plenty of them out there in the world. Because they’re so common, I find that fruit and nut bars are really hit or miss. While the idea is simple, chocolate, raisins and nuts (in this case almonds), there are several factors that can make this bar great or completely ruin it. The problem is that you can have some elements work very well, but if certain elements aren’t great, it can ruin the whole bar. This is really the case with this Danish Dreams Fruit and Nut bar.

The biggest problem right off the bat is the quality of the chocolate. This is probably the most important element to a fruit and nut bar, particularly because it’s the largest part of the bar. While some candy bars can get away with lesser chocolate, this bar really needs to have a nice quality chocolate to hold the bar together. The chocolate in this case is just not good at all. It’s virtually flavourless, and has a really waxy texture. This alone is enough to ruin this bar, but that’s not all.

The next important feature of this bar is the fruit and nuts. The quality of the raisins and almonds is okay. In fact I really enjoyed them, when I eventually got some. While the quality of these two ingredient was fine, the distribution was pretty sparse. Considering the chocolate was so low quality the bar could have been improved if it had a good quantity of fruit and nuts, along with a good distribution of these ingredients. It’s a shame because the quality was fine, but I just didn’t get enough.

There are many better fruit and nut bars out there, and I feel like anyone who’s reading a website dedicated to candy would be fairly disappointed with this bar. On a side note, has anyone every had a fruit and nut bar that didn’t have just raisins? It wasn’t a problem for me with this particular bar (it had other issues), but maybe if someone dared to step out of the raisin box, they could gain a few points for creativity.
