Eclairs "Kulfi"

Primiy

I had to do a little research to figure out the flavour of this chewy treat. Kulfi is an ice cream flavour popular in the Indian Subcontinent. I’ve actually tasted it before, but didn’t know what it was called. It’s a very creamy and sweet flavour, and I guess this treat kind of tasted like it. I’ll be honest though, it’s been a while since I’ve tasted Kulfi, so it may not be as spot on as I remember. I also remember Kulfi having nuts, specifically pistachios on it, and I think it added something to the flavour that this just doesn’t have.

The lack of pistachios and the general sweet and creamy flavour of Kulfi actually gave me a bit of an existential crisis when I ate this candy. Making caramel taste like other things is fine, but if you make them taste like other creamy, sweet things, it’s kind of hard to understand what the gimmick is. I ate this caramel and all I could think is that it tasted like caramel. It had a slightly unique creamy quality, but nothing really that bold. I thought maybe I was getting tired of tasting new candies, and that all candies were going to start tasting the same to me. Then I sat and thought about it and realized that it’s actually a candy company putting two very similar flavours together.

I think the other issue is that Kulfi is often served cold, or actually frozen. There are certain desserts and definitely certain ice creams where temperature is one of the key factors of why the flavour works. I feel like Kulfi might not work at room temperature. Combine that with the fact that it tastes so similar to caramel, I just found the interesting aspect of this caramel treat was lost.
