There are a few things I learned about chocolate while eating this bar. Unfortunately none of them involved me suddenly discovering a new flavour that I absolutely love. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate this bar, but I didn’t love it either. I can’t see this bar every becoming a must have in my candy stash, but I wouldn’t think less of someone who would rank this bar in their top 5. It’s a fine quality chocolate bar, but there’s just a few things about it that didn’t impress me.
The main reason I picked up this bar is because of the oat milk. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a chocolate bar made with oat milk before. I guess I was hoping that the oat milk might give this chocolate bar a unique flavour, but it doesn’t. If you’re a vegan and you want milk chocolate, I guess the good news is that oat milk works, and it can lead to a very similar milk chocolate experience.
There was however one part of this bar that didn’t work for me at all, the sea salt. First of all I want to point out a little detail that always ticks me off. The front of the package says “sea salt”, while the ingredient list says Himalayan salt. I don’t want to school people on geography, but the Himalayan mountains are a mostly (as far as I know) landlocked mountain range, and not in the sea at all. I’ve actually visited the salt mines where they get the pink salt, and there is no water near it at all.
My other problem with the salt in this bar is how it’s delivered. There is no crunchy salt texture that goes along with this bar. This is just a salty chocolate bar. While eating this bar I’ve discovered that I thought I liked salted chocolate, but apparently I like salt (or salty things) in my chocolate. I like a good salty and sweet combination, but for some reason I just didn’t like that the salt was just blended with the chocolate flavour. I feel like I would have much preferred a few flecks of flaky sea salt scattered on the top, instead of this purely blended flavour.
Maybe some people might be okay with this bar, and I love the fact that they’re creating a bar that’s doing some good for the natural world. The chocolate quality was okay, but the salty flavour just didn’t work for me at all.
