I don’t normally comment very much about the names of candies on this website. It probably factors somewhat when I’m looking at the novelty of a particular treat, but for the most part I don’t really give it much thought. These “Frogs Alive” gummies on the other hand need some notice. These are Australian gummies, so it could be that there’s some kind of context that goes along with the name. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Australia once (and maybe still has) an infestation of frogs that all but destroyed a portion of their natural ecosystem. Maybe taking vengeance on live frogs was considered okay.
I assume the fact that they’re red has more to do with the flavour. I would call the flavour fruity, and very similar to Swedish fish. They claim to be raspberry, but I get a much more general berry/red fruit flavour out of them. To achieve raspberry I feel like the flavour would have to be much more subtle and a tiny bit tart. These just blast you with a flavour I can best describe as red. It’s not to say I didn’t like the flavour, it’s just not raspberry.
Texture and shape wise I think Allen’s hit it out of the park. They look like cute little frogs, and I guess if you’re looking to take revenge over a destroyed ecosystem they’ll do fine. The texture is soft, but chewy enough to be satisfying. It’s also not too hard and after eating almost half a bag my jaw does not hurt at all.
These are fine gummies, maybe not worth hunting down but well worth picking up if you see them. I will certainly enjoy eating the rest of them, even if I have no personal grudge against the frogs.
