Guinness "Caramel Chocolate"

Lir Chocolates

I had very low expectations of this chocolate. This comes from the fact that I’ve had Guinness themed chocolate in the past and it didn’t really work out. I’ve even had Guinness themed chocolate made by the very same company in the past (Lir Chocolates) and it didn’t work out. The reason I got this bar is that it was a gift from a friend, but I probably would have never given this kind of bar a second chance otherwise. In the past I found that the chocolate didn’t really have any of the features of a Guinness beer and was in fact kind of low quality chocolate.

This bar however has something different that makes it kind of work. Instead of just chocolate flavoured with (or flavoured to be similar to) Guinness, they’ve instead decided to flavour the caramel with Guinness. While I was skeptical at first, after my first bite I was actually kind of turned around. While I wouldn’t say that the caramel screamed Guinness, it did have a nice flavour to it. It’s as if they used Guinness as an ingredient to change the caramel slightly but in a good way. I wouldn’t suggest that all caramels should have Guinness to make them better, but I would say that a little Guinness in caramel now and again doesn’t hurt. I remember seeing this bar the first time I bought the plain chocolate Guinness bar, but I opted to try a more pure beer and chocolate combination instead of something with more ingredients. As it turns out I was wrong in choosing that bar, and I should have gone for this one.

I’m not saying this is the best caramel bar I’ve ever had, but it’s far from being bad. The chocolate is nice enough and the caramel has a unique twist, but it’s still pleasant. I can’t complain about this bar, but maybe it could use just a little more Guinness flavour. It tastes good, and it tastes unique, but if the package didn’t say Guinness on it I wouldn’t have guessed that there was any in it. The chocolate could be improved too, but it still wasn’t bad.
