Gummi Cones "Red"

Mojoz

I had a hard time trying to figure out how to review this treat. A gummy ice cream cone is not something you see every day, and trying to figure out the fair way to review it was tough. My first decision is if I should review it with or without anything inside it. I figured having ice cream inside made the most sense since I could enjoy it as it was supposed to be enjoyed, and I could also take a bite or two without the ice cream to see if it works on its own. My fear was that the ice cream might interfere with the cone too much. The next problem was trying to figure out what kind of ice cream would work. I didn’t want to cater too much to this odd snack, so I avoided sorbets. I also didn’t want to get anything too fancy that might detract from the gummy cone, like a rocky road. I decided in the end that a simple strawberry ice cream would work best for this experiment.

Before even eating the cone, I was a little nervous that a really sweet cone might not work with the ice cream. I know waffle and sugar cones are sweet, but gummies are even sweeter. Turns out it wasn’t much of a problem, as the ice cream actually acted as the balance for the sweet gummy. I was also wondering if the gummy cone would freeze, but it didn’t. It was still fairly pliable the entire time. The good thing about these is that the gummy is thick enough that it holds it shape fairly well, but still has a nice soft gummy texture. I would probably say that the gummy is on the harder end of gummies, but the cones are small enough that one will not cause your jaw any pain.

Flavour wise I was really surprised how well it worked. A fruity flavoured cone actually goes well with a fruity flavoured ice cream. I would also imagine that a chocolate ice cream would be pretty good too since fruit and ice cream pair well together. I didn’t try it with an ice cream with nuts or other crunchy bits, but I might imagine that some people might not enjoy the soft cone with crunchy nuts.

One feature worth mentioning is the bottom of the cone... actually it’s not really a cone at all. The bottom is actually flat. It’s smaller than the top, so I don’t think it’s a good way to set your ice cream down. It is however a great way to collect the melted drips of ice cream at the bottom. I had a few moments when melted ice cream dripped out of the cone, but the bottom did collect a lot of it. The design is also not perfect, as the top was a little uneven. I don’t think it affected eating my ice cream cone, but it did make it look a little wonky, particularly before I put the ice cream in the cone.

Over all this was a very creative treat, and it worked. I was able to enjoy my strawberry ice cream in a fun and creative cone. I feel as though you have to really think about what kind of ice cream you pair with what flavour of gummy cone you get. They also have yellow and orange colour/flavour if red doesn’t suit you. If you see these out in the world and you’re curious, give them a try. It might not be the replacement for classic cones, but it’s a fun and creative thing to try now and again.
