Haitai Gum "Specialmint Flavor"

Haitai

The first few chews of this gum is really confusing. It’s confusing because it really lacks a great deal of flavour at first. Not that it suddenly explodes with flavour later on either, but the first few chews had me almost convinced that I was about to eat the first piece of non-flavoured gum of my life. I wasn’t sure if it was some kind of mix-up at the factory or if the lack of flavour was intentional. I still don’t know why this gum doesn’t hit you with the flavour right off the bat, but at least I know now that it eventually comes.

The flavour is very “unique”, not great but also not horrible either. I would describe the flavour at first as being wood like. Eventually there is a minty flavour, but it’s always competing with this wood like flavour. I should also mention that both of these flavours are fairly subdued as well. At no point are you blown away with a fresh mouth full of mint or wood for that matter. The coolness of this mint gum is also very subdued.

After a few chews I started to figure out the flavour a little better. I’ll be honest, I really had to think about it while chewing it. It’s funny because at first I thought this gum was a total failure flavour wise, but then I realized that it actually tastes like mint, but not the flavour commonly used in gums. This gum actually tasted like you were chewing on a leaf (and maybe a branch) of real mint. Maybe it’s not as powerful as real mint, particularly with the cooling sensation, but the mint mixed with what I can only describe as a wood like flavour makes you taste like you’re eating a plant.

The one part of this candy that still confuses me is the name “Specialmint”. It gets even more confusing as the inside package says Peppermint instead of Specialmint. It’s all very peculiar.
