As a child I was a huge fan of one particular type of peach gummy. The problem with gummies, particularly when I was a kid, is that they often come in bulk. This would mean that if you bought the gummies at a store that sold them either individually (something that happened in the 80s and early 90s) or if you bought them at a candy store or bulk food store, you didn’t know for sure if you were getting the candy you wanted or another peach gummy. It’s not uncommon for stores that sell candy by weight or individually to not put the exact correct name of the candy on the bins, and even more rare for them to put the maker of that candy.
This is all to say that this is not the peach candy I would have been looking for. These peach gummies aren’t horrible but they’re not one of the best gummies ever made either. The texture is a little softer than I would like, more of a jelly than a full on gummy. The peach flavour is probably the highlight, which is a good thing since this is a peach gummy. The biggest downfall however is the sourness, or lack of sourness. I don’t think these claim to be sour, but I find that for some reason peach candies really improve if they’re kind of sour. They don’t have to be the kind of sour that sends you screaming, but a nice tart peach gummy really hits the spot.
The odd thing about these gummies is the shape. Haribo makes lots of gummies in lots of different shapes, but for some reason they’ve decided to make their peach gummies heart shaped. One might argue that a peach is kind of heart shaped, but I feel like these are more heart shaped than peach shaped. The colouring is also a little weird, almost a checker board colour pattern.
I didn’t hate these gummies, but they certainly don’t compare to the gummies I used to love as a kid. While I’m not disappointed with this bag of gummies, I can’t see myself ever seeking them out again. Others might disagree, but as long as Maynards still makes Fuzzy Peach gummies, I think these Haribo peach gummies are pretty average.
