I feel like the name “Veggy Mix” is a little misleading. The name comes from the fact that these gummies are in fact vegan. They don’t taste like vegetables, and I guess I’m okay with that. I probably would have still got them if they did taste like vegetables, but the chances of my liking them might be a little lower. Don’t get me wrong, I would have been super impressed and curious to try vegetable flavoured gummies, I can just understand why a company wouldn’t want to take that chance.
My knowledge about the ingredients in these vegan gummies is fairly low and since they were made in Turkey, and I can’t read the label. I assume that the gelatin was replaced with agar, but other than that I don’t know what the difference might be. I’m not even sure if other than gelatine, there’s anything in gummies that isn’t vegan. I’m obviously not a vegan, but I really like to taste test vegan treats. As you’ll read below, sometimes when a company makes a vegan treat they have to make changes and not just an exact copy of a treat. Sometimes these changes actually make a great variation of the treat.
This is really a great variation. I think texture is the main difference you’ll find between these and most Haribo gummy treats. I would define these as more of a jelly than your classic gummy because your teeth really sink into them. While it’s a different texture, it’s just as satisfying as most other gummies. The great thing is that they balanced the delicate jelly texture with a delicate fruity flavour. Each flavour was very different from the others and each represented their fruit well. The grapefruit was a real highlight too, a fruit I feel is underrepresented in the candy and gummy world.
While I don’t know if these are worth hunting out unless you’re vegan, I will say that Haribo is not selling vegans short. They produced a candy that sits shoulder to shoulder with other great gummy treats.
