I like the idea of putting interesting and maybe even odd things in chocolate. Many times I’ve heard the expression that everything can be improved with chocolate. While I don’t always agree with that statement (see onions), I love pushing and testing the limits. In this case it is a unique thing to cover in chocolate, however in some ways the way it’s done isn’t that surprising.
For those unfamiliar, lotus seeds are a common treat/snack in South East Asia. They’re apparently most popular in Cambodia, where I first had them and fell in love with them. There, they often eat the seeds fresh out of the flower. In the case of these chocolates the seeds have been dried, which makes a big difference. Dried seeds and nuts covered in chocolate isn’t that unique an idea, and it often works. What I’m saying is that the lotus seeds presented like this works well covered in chocolate, however I think if they were fresh it wouldn’t work as well.
If I was to describe the flavour of lotus seeds (both dried and fresh) I would say that they have a very green flavour. There is no doubt that you’re eating a seed from a flower. These chocolates also taste like you’re eating seeds from a flower covered in chocolate. They seem to balance the chocolate and lotus seeds fairly well, as you get a good taste of both. This is kind of the problem as you either taste lotus seed or chocolate, never both together. Maybe if the chocolate was marginally better the flavours might have blended a little more, but each bite of these either tastes like lotus or chocolate.
The crunch of the lotus seed is nice with the chocolate, so I really feel like this is something that could work. I’m not sure if it’s something that could replace peanuts, almonds or other more popular nuts and seeds. The thing that makes this worth trying is the fact that not too many people have tried to make this combination work, so it’s unique.
