I’m not normally the kind of person that searches out healthy, organic, or even ethical labels on my candy. It’s not that I don’t care about my health or social ethics, I just want this site to focus on the flavour and fun of candy and leave politics behind. I also find that what’s ethical one day is the enemy the next, and the same goes for what’s healthy. Having said that, it’s not that I avoid these candies either, they just fit into the same category as all treats to me. The reason I picked up this bar is because I found the picture of the owl to be entertaining.
The other thing to note about these treats in my case is that I also don’t take their lack of sugar or gluten into account when I review them. However, this bar has a slightly interesting thing about it that’s worth mentioning. Most often when a candy or chocolate bar is sugar free (or no sugar added), they simply substitute the sugar with sugar alcohols or something like stevia. In this case there most certainly is some kind of sugar substitute, however they also seem to have lowered the sweetness of the bar as well. It was a nice change of pace to have a slightly less sweet milk chocolate bar.
Other than the ethics, the lack of ingredients, and the slightly less sweet flavour, this was a fairly typical milk chocolate bar. It melted the way milk chocolate should, and tasted absolutely fine. The less sweet flavour was a nice twist, but not something I’d search out again in the future. If you do have or want to have chocolate with no gluten, no palm oil, or no sugar added then this bar might be one to keep an eye open for. If you don’t mind any of these ingredients then I’d give it a maybe.
